Wir hatten das Riesenglück, dass während unseres Urlaubs ein interessantes Spiel stattfand - Champions-League-Qualifikation, der maltesische Meister Birkirkara FC spielte gegen Reykjavik KR.

Alle wichtigen Spiele auf Malta finden im Nationalstadium statt. Es ist in T'Qali (Craft Village), zwischen Rabat und Mosta. Der Ablauf der Spiele ist doch etwas anders wie bei uns. Das Stadion wird erst ca. 1 Stunde vor Anstoss geöffnet, irgendwann .. so ca. 1/2 Stunde später .. macht dann auch die "Bar" auf. Da gibt's leckere Hamburger, und falls man evtl. doch mal 'nen Flaschenöffner findet wohl auch wieder Bier ;-) Beachten: die Spiele finden wegen der Hitze immer abends statt, und nach den Spielen fahren keine Busse mehr!! Ein Taxi bekommt man auch nur sehr schwer!!
Ursprünglich wurde im "Empire Stadium" in Gzira gespielt, noch bis Anfang der 80er Jahre, danach wurden zunächst alle Länderspiele in's Nationalstadion verlegt, das am 14.12.1980 offiziel eingeweiht wurde. Inzwischen finden dort alle Spiele der Liga statt, so dass in Spitzenzeiten nahezu täglich ein Spiel stattfindet. Das Stadion bietet 35.000 Sitzplätze, davon 6.000 auf der (überdachten) Tribüne. Das alte Stadion mit seinem knüppelharten Lehmboden (deshalb auch "die Hölle von Gzira" genannt) wird fast gar nicht mehr genutzt. Der ehemalige Deutsche Bundestrainer Jupp Derwall meinte übrigens, das alte Stadion hätte man doch eher als Flugzeugpiste nutzen sollen ..
